Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has shared his reasons for preferring President Bola Tinubu over Peter Obi if both were to compete in the 2027 elections.
In an interview with Channels Television on Friday, Adeyanju emphasized that his stance is not due to loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but rather a reflection of his personal beliefs about democracy, tolerance, and political conduct.
“Why would someone like me support the APC? I have no reason to support the APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu. This is because we cannot have a situation where a man whose supporters cannot tolerate criticism labels people with all sorts of names. Anyone who does not support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria. They claim that anyone who doesn’t support their candidate has been paid or compromised to support the government.”
Adeyanju dismissed allegations that he is collaborating with the APC to weaken the opposition, insisting that his political views have always been consistent and independent. He pointed out that in past elections, he has voted for candidates from various parties based on his assessment of their suitability.
“I have never voted for a bad candidate in my opinion. In 1999, I voted for Obasanjo. In 2011, I voted for Goodluck Jonathan. In 2015, I voted for Jonathan again because I couldn’t support Buhari, and in 2023, I voted for Omoyele Sowore,” Adeyanju said.
He explained that his decision to oppose Obi is largely influenced by his experience with the behavior of some of Obi’s supporters during the last election. He claimed that many of them engaged in online attacks and intimidation against those who held opposing views.
“What we are saying is that we must sanitize our political environment. We cannot have a country where people terrorize others simply for expressing differing opinions,” he concluded.
